September 3, 2011 marks the start of the college football season. It also ushers in an innovation in the stadium concessions industry with the launch of RockTops. To be introduced at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind. and The University of New Mexico’s University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M., RockTops is a departure from traditional nacho trays and allows fans to easily manage their concession food while enjoying the game.
Considered an innovation in an industry where little technical advancement exists, the patented RockTops’ nachos container replaces the traditional plastic tray. It lets customers better manage a soft drink and nachos while leaving the other hand free to carry additional items purchased at the concession stand. Ergonomically designed to fit on the top of a soda cup using the straw as the anchor, the nachos rests securely on the cup, with or without the lid, and customers can easily manage both items in one hand without spilling the soda or dropping the nachos. Once at the seat, RockTops makes the drinking cup a manageable “table top.” Fans do not have to hold their nachos in a separate hand and be distracted from the game or put their food underneath their seat or on the lap.
“Who couldn’t use a third hand and a mobile table top when at the game?” said Randy Asselin, president of RockTops, an Albuquerque-based company. “As an inventor and entrepreneur, the simplest ideas are usually the best. As a sports fan, I felt there had to be a better way to enjoy stadium food from the concessions stand while watching the game. I created RockTops so fans would have a safe and convenient way to better manger their stadium fare without missing a play or fumbling their food. It also helps concessions stands sell more product in an ailing economy.” RockTops will initially be available in the club and select sections of Notre Dame Stadium during the first game between Notre Dame and South Florida, and RockTops expects its product to be available at most college and professional sports venues throughout the country within the next 12 months.
Nacho containers are the first of several RockTops products designed for concession stands, fast food restaurants, and convenience stores. The patented RockTops containers are made from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 100% recycled material.
